One of the themes I promote over and over again is if a product is needed, the market will make it profitable. Government subsidies are unnecessary. Let the product fail or succeed on its own accord.
That is what makes it disappointing when I see Fred Thompson making this promise:
Meeting with reporters, Thompson acknowledged that he had switched his position on subsidies for ethanol.
“I have voted against subsidies in the Senate,” said Thompson. “But I think it’s a matter now of national security and we’ve got to avail ourselves of a lot of different resources, and I think renewable has to be a part of that picture.”
Sell out. Makes it tough for me to vote for the man. And don’t fool yourself into thinking it is just me. The above link goes to Newsvine, where you can read the statements of other conservatives:
KyleN:
Doh sold out, ethanol shouldn’t get any benefits beyond what every technology gets.
jpark
Disappointing.
If Fred starts vacillating and selling out for votes, he will ultimately lose.
Snap out of it Fred!
and me:
I read the brief on the front page and said, “I’ll bet he’s in Iowa, isn’t he?”
Sell-out.
