Flashback – Obama: “When times are tough, you tighten your belts.” Meanwhile, Michelle’s Spanish Holiday Cost American Taxpayers Over $375,000

This year Americans worked until April 9th to pay our tax bill. That’s 99 days of work, with no take-home pay at all. Every penny we earned was seized by the Federal government.

Here’s a look at how this administration is spending it during the failed “Summer of Recovery.”

Whether or not the taxpaying American will be paying for meals, they will definitely be footing the bill for the First Lady’s 68-strong security detail, her personal staff – and the use of presidential jet Air Force Two.

The per diems for the secret service team runs at around £172 each, which amounts to nearly £60,000 for the length of the summer break.

Use of Air Force Two, the Air Force version of a 757, comes in at £91,900 for the round trip. This does not include time on the ground.

Mrs Obama’s personal staff, of which there are an unknown amount and who might cost considerably more per day, also have to be taken into account.

The American public will also cover the cost of the only official part of the holiday, a visit to the Spanish royal family on the island of Majorca.

This will involve transport there and back for the entourage – as well as travel, accommodation, food and expenses for all while on the island.

Conservative estimates already put the total cost at £150,000. With Majorca to come, the bill will be more like £250,000.

Drudge’s headline estimated £250,000 being equal to about $375,000. The money converter I used put it at $399,218.70.

Someone needs to remind the First Family of two things.

First off, the country is falling apart economically. People are losing jobs, spending 99 weeks or more on unemployment and Obamavilles are popping up across the landscape.

Second, the president and First Lady are showing poor leadership by going on eight holidays in one summer.

That’s not me saying that. Consider the words of Obama:

“When times are tough, you tighten your belts,” The Hill quoted Obama saying today at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire.” You don’t go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.”

While the Obama’s can spend their money however they see fit, the fact of the matter is simple: times are tough for the American government. When times are tough, you tighten your belt, Mr. President. The country is piling up trillion dollar deficits. You don’t spend close to half a million dollars that you borrowed from China to send your wife on a vacation in Spain.

It’s leadership like this that has earned the First Family a reputation as being elitist and the comparison of the First Lady to “a modern-day Marie Antoinette.”

Let them eat cake? No, let them eat “sea bass tartare, strawberry gazpacho and sardines, followed by a main course of lobster with seaweed risotto.”
