We had to decide whether to end his life and let his brother live, or risk them both.
By Sara Lester • Nov 5th, 2007How many prospective parents are given a line like this, told by doctors “if you don’t abort, you’re putting your own life or a sibling’s life at risk” or “your baby isn’t going to survive anyway, you might as well abort him/her now and spare them pain.” Luckily for these parents, the doctor’s attempts to end the life of their precious baby failed, and the precious boy was born, healthy and gorgeous, right along with his brother.
Then doctors said his heart was three times normal size and it was likely he would have a heart attack or a stroke in the womb.
They said it would be impossible to keep him alive afterwards as he was so poorly. It would be kinder to let him die in the womb with his brother by his side than to die alone after being born.
“That made my mind up for me. I wanted the best thing for him.”
Of course the parents wanted what was best for their children. They obviously love their babies, and took the word of a doctor whom they trusted as truth, as so many parents do.
However, despite doctors’ best, or sometimes worst, intentions, despite their years of schooling, they are not infallible. They are not gods, and should not play God. How many healthy babies die as a result of doctors’ faulty recommendations?
Mrs Jones said: “The boys are so healthy, they have huge appetites too. Ieuan is the noisy one, while Gabriel is always laughing, it’s like he’s just so happy to be here.
“There is such a strong bond between them.
“They are always holding hands and if one cries, the other reaches out to comfort him.”
“Doctors tried to break their bond in the womb, but they just proved it couldn’t be broken.”
Thank God for miracles.
