National Guard Soldier Crowned Miss Utah

Here’s a shining example of a ‘Citizen Soldier’. The new Miss Utah is a combat veteran who served for 18 months in Afghanistan as a medic.

Sgt. Jill Stevens, a member of 1st Battalion, 211th Aviation, Utah National Guard, was crowned Miss Utah Saturday evening, June 30, at the annual pageant held at the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City.

As the only member of the military in the running this year. Stevens, of Kaysville, competed as Miss Davis County along with 49 other contestants from throughout the state.

I’ve heard it said that only the underachievers in our society choose to serve in our military. Having served in the Army, and lived about a half mile outside an Army base where all my neighbors were soldiers, I can assure you that some of the best and brightest are defending this nation. But even if you don’t want to take my word for it, just have a look at Sgt. Stevens. She just graduated from Southern Utah University as a Registered Nurse and has enough personality to win the Miss Utah pageant. Not exactly what you’d call the dregs of society.

Sgt. Stevens will compete in the Miss America pageant in Las Vegas this January.
