NY Times Attacks Fred Thompson’s Wife

Fred Thompson has yet to announce his candidacy for president, yet the main stream media is already taking shots at him with hit piece after hit piece. This one by the NY Times focuses more on Fred’s wife than on Fred, attempting to suggest that conservative voters will have a problem with a candidate with a “trophy wife.”

…with the possible candidacy of Fred D. Thompson, the grandfatherly actor and former Republican senator from Tennessee, whose second wife is almost a quarter-century his junior, comes a less palatable inquiry that is spurring debate in Internet chat rooms, on cable television and on talk radio: Is America ready for a president with a trophy wife?

The question may seem sexist, even crass, but serious people — as well as Mr. Thompson’s supporters — have been wrestling with the public reaction to Jeri Kehn Thompson, whose youthfulness, permanent tan and bleached blond hair present a contrast to the 64-year-old man who hopes to win the hearts of the conservative core of the Republican party. Will the so-called values voters accept this union?

May seem sexist? It is sexist. So much for feminism. I’m sure the feminist wing of the NY Times will condemn this article. Yeah, that’ll happen.

About midway through the article, but past where most people stop reading, they give one paragraph to show the positive side of Mr.s Thompson:

She is a former Senate aide and a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee. And she is not a home wrecker. Mr. Thompson had been divorced from his first wife for almost two decades before he remarried in 2002.

But then they go right back to slamming her:

The details of Mrs. Thompson’s résumé have not been officially distributed. And unlike other potential presidential spouses like Elizabeth Edwards and Michelle Obama, Mrs. Thompson lets her husband do most of the political talking.

Who might be running for president again? Why is this a bad thing?

Karen O’Connor, the director of the Women & Politics Institute at American University, said Mr. Thompson may lose with one key group whose support he needs: Republican women.

“I think women have an innate ‘ick’ reaction when they see a wife so much younger and vital than her husband,” Professor O’Connor said.

I think Republican women have a bigger “ick” reaction when looking at Hillary’s spouse than at Fred Thompson’s.

What the article fails to mention is that Fred has already been endorsed by an interesting group: his ex-girlfriends.

Lorrie Morgan, a country singer who dated Thompson and considered marrying him in the mid1990s, told The Sunday Times: “I couldn’t think of a bad word to say about Fred if somebody put a gun to my head.

“Fred is a perfect example of chivalry. He’s the kind of man little girls dream about marrying, who opens doors for you, lights your cigarettes, helps you on with your coat, buys wonderful gifts. It’s every woman’s fantasy.”

It may be possible, although apparently outside the realm of thought at the NY Times, that Fred may be a great man, who happened to find himself a great woman. And neither one of them let age be a factor in their appreciation for one another. But that isn’t an interesting story now is it?

Now, what I want to know is, where is the NY Times article on Dennis Kucinich and his new wife:

The one-time Democratic presidential candidate married 27-year-old Elizabeth Harper on Sunday in a park alongside Cleveland City Hall. It was the third marriage for the twice-divorced Kucinich, who is 58.

That’s a 31 year difference, trumping Fred and Jeri’s 24 year span. Where’s the article pondering whether this will have an effect on his chances? I couldn’t find one. Why is that?

Three things factor into the absence of that story. First, Dennis is a far-left Democrat. The Times is a liberal newspaper. Hence, no article decrying his robbing of the cradle.

Second, it is assumed by the liberal mind that they are generally more accepting of things like this and are not as judgemental as those mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging conservatives. Obviously, we would take exception to such a marriage.

And third, Dennis doesn’t have a chance at the White House.

But the hypocrisy is still present.
