Today begins a week-long series of articles written for All American Blogger by some of the bloggers we know and respect. The subject of this series is, “Why should I care about politics?”

Our first guest blogger is Guy Midkiff from Concealed.Wordpress.com. Guy writes a great blog covering all aspects of the Second Amendment, and it is a favorite of ours. Comments are welcome on the article and the series in general. Enjoy Guy’s article.

“Why should I care…..about politics?”

I re-read the Preamble to the Constitution while preparing this article. When I read the part about, “We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union….” I could not help but thinking about the original intent of the framers and how they devised the Constitution as a means to speak to each and every one of us.

When I read the Preamble, I think I know what they were trying to communicate to us: “Americans, this is our gift to you. We are giving you a road map that will guide you in what will undoubtedly be some very difficult times. It will be up to you, future Americans (We the people), to protect our (your) union - participate.

If you are not willing to fight for the gift of freedom and the ideals that the framers and founders provided for in the Constitution, if you do not fight back the continual encroachments on the Constitution, then our cherished rights will become rights without duty, rights without meaning, rights without cause.

The 13 colonies came together in a common cause: duty and obligation to protect and form a union. I fear that once this commonality is lost, the bond that holds us together as a country will be lost. At that point, our rights can no longer be reconciled against a fading sense of responsibility. We will devolve into a fractured and fatally flawed country that put self-interest ahead of a common goal.

Simply put, if you do not participate in the American political process, then you have become part of what ails this country.
