You Can Have Guns, But We’ll Control the Ammo

This isn’t the first time I have heard this idea. The Constitution gives us a right to “keep and bear arms.” But anti-gun proponents keep looking for ways to restrict that right. One way that keeps popping back up is to restrict the access to ammunition.

Although it’s not a perfect solution, I suggest we control ammunition, not guns. Let’s keep control in the hands of citizens, not the government. We don’t need a new state or national department to increase tax liabilities and bureaucratic red tape. Gun clubs could be exclusively established and licensed to sell ammunition. By limiting the sources of ammunition, we can place accessibility in the hands of those who know best how to use it responsibly and rationally. Anyone who wishes to fire a weapon would apply for membership in a recognized group. They could be organized as multipurpose or as single-purpose associations.

There are also bills that tax ammo, some ten cents a bullet, some more. Not to mention OSHA’s possible new regulations for manufacturing ammo:

“The proposed rule indiscriminately treats ammunition, powder and primers as ‘explosives,’” the NRA said in a published statement, which noted the plan would:

  • Prohibit possession of firearms in commercial “facilities containing explosives”—an obvious problem for your local gun store.
  • Require evacuation of all “facilities containing explosives”—even your local Wal-Mart—during any electrical storm.
  • Prohibit smoking within 50 feet of “facilities containing explosives.”

The proposal by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration “would have a dramatic effect on the storage and transportation of ammunition and handloading components such as primers or black and smokeless powder,” the group said.

OSHA’s proposal would “revise” its standards for “explosives and blasting agents” to include ammunition.

“This revision … is intended to enhance the protections provided to employees engaged in the manufacture, storage, sale, transportation, handling, and use of explosives,” the federal agency said.

Full Story.

There is a way to get around control of ammo. Reload your own.  I’d start stocking up on primers and powder now, before the price skyrockets.
