Arizona Considering Guns On Campus
By Andrew Riley • Feb 16th, 2008 • 303 ViewsFollowing the latest campus shooting, this time in Illinois, Arizona lawmakers are set to debate legislation that would allow persons with a concealed carry permit to have guns on Arizona college campuses.
Rep. Russell Pearce, a bill co-sponsor, said Friday that school campuses have become “no-defense zones” where students, teachers and others are sitting ducks during violent incidents such as Thursday’s shooting at Northern Illinois University.
“To deprive citizens of defending themselves is just wrong,” said Pearce, R-Mesa, who has 30 years of experience in the criminal-justice system. “These (current) laws do nothing to protect good citizens; they just make them much more vulnerable.”
There are 2 reasons this legislation should pass. First, the Constitution says we have the right. Second, as Rep. Pearce said, “To deprive citizens of defending themselves is just wrong”. How many school shootings are we going to have to see before we realize that people willing to commit multiple murders aren’t worried about gun free campus laws?
