More On the Obama Doubletalk on NAFTA

barack_obama.jpgOn the podcast, we talked about a report that Obama denies, detailing how he is telling the American people one thing and the Canadian government the other. Well, now a memo has emerged
that shows he is, in fact, telling the American voter what he thinks they want to hear with no intention whatsoever of actually doing it:

The memo is the first documentation to emerge publicly out of the meeting between the adviser, Austan Goolsbee, and officials with the Canadian consulate in Chicago, but Goolsbee said it misinterprets what he told them. The memo was written by Joseph DeMora, who works for the consulate and attended the meeting.

Goolsbee disputed a section that read: “Noting anxiety among many U.S. domestic audiences about the U.S. economic outlook, Goolsbee candidly acknowledged the protectionist sentiment that has emerged, particularly in the Midwest, during the primary campaign. He cautioned that this messaging should not be taken out of context and should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans.”

“This thing about `it’s more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans,’ that’s this guy’s language,” Goolsbee said of DeMora. “He’s not quoting me.

“I certainly did not use that phrase in any way,” Goolsbee said.

As per the norm, the first line of defense when confronted with something you said is to declare it has been taken out of context. And I’m sure the Obamatons will line up to defend the guy. But let’s get real here. It is clear that Obama is simply telling the American people what they want to hear, while telling the Canadians not to worry about it, that he is just playing the people for political gain.

Step two in the playbook is minimize the whole affair:

He said he has been surprised that such a banal and trivial meeting with a low-level consulate official has created so much controversy and resulted in such an inaccurate depiction. He said he was invited to the consulate to meet the officials and get a tour.

He said the visit lasted about 40 minutes, and perhaps two to three minutes were spent discussing NAFTA.

I hope this gets to some people and they can see that he isn’t any different than any other two-bit political hack to sell a bill of goods. But to the fainters and the screamers, who see Barack as the second coming of Christ, it isn’t going to make a difference. I’m starting to see these folks in the same light as an Al Gore disciple.
