“What if the money spent on war was instead spent on education?”

I blame the government schools. People today fail to see the slow march to socialism and the distance we have put between our spending and the Constitution. No where in there does the Constitution say the Federal government should be paying even one penny for education. It does however, allow spending on national defense.

The socialist mentality is reinforced by articles like this:

What if the money spent on war was instead spent on education?
The war in Iraq has cost a whopping $443.7 billion*. More than half of the people in the U.S. and more than half of the people in Iraq strongly oppose the war, yet the fighting-and the spending-continue.

Every state in the U.S. has contributed funds that could have been spent elsewhere. One great example is Oklahoma. The state has spent more than $6.7 billion on Iraq in only four years.

If the money would have been spent on education instead, it could have bought four-year college scholarships for 325,624 Oklahoma students-not bad considering less than 45,000 students graduated from an Oklahoma high school this year.

Nationally, the figures are just as distressing; here is what the money spent on Iraq could have provided in the U.S.:

  • 21,510,598 full four-year scholarships to public universities
  • 7,689,734 new public school teachers
  • 58,770,981 chances for children to attend head-start

The money could have also purchased health insurance policies for 265,701,285 people or housing for 3,995,293 homeless families.

Save my bleeding heart! What a bunch of emotional drivel.

“Oh, we could have helped the homeless with that money. Boo hoo!” When what the last time you gave a homeless person a sandwich or a blanket? When was the last time you donated to a charity that serves such causes? Instead, you want to spend my dollars to pay for something you want. That’s looting.

I have a question. What if we stuck to the Constitution and spent money only according to what it said we should?

Crazy, I know. Today’s Federal budget spends money on things the Founding Fathers would have rejected without hesitation. But today’s politicians are more interested in securing re-election than in securing the economic liberty of its constituents. What ever happened to limited government?
