Giuliani was in Souix City, IA, telling everyone he could about how he is going to save America from the noose of foreign oil. His solution? Well, he’s in Iowa and they grow a lot of corn there:
On a visit to Iowa, the leading ethanol-producing state, Giuliani called for more ethanol plants and new nuclear reactors, oil refineries and transmission lines.
I like the nuke plants, oil refineries and transmission lines, but if he is suggesting that the government help pay, count me out. Government can just get out of the way and let things progress as they should.
Also, he fails to mention this part:
The United States produces and uses more gallons of ethanol fuel than Brazil — a relatively recent development — although Brazil remains the world’s largest exporter. Ethanol is made from sugar in Brazil and from corn in the U.S., where government farm policy keeps sugar prices higher and limits supply.
Tell me that you are going to eliminate the sugar subsidies and price controls and use sugar to make ethanol. How about that idea? Is the sugar lobby that powerful? Wouldn’t this increased need for sugar increase the price of sugar naturally, instead of having my tax dollars inflate the price? The market would work if you would get out of the way.
