McCain Continues to Lean Left, Attacks Base on Immigration
By Duane Lester • May 5th, 2008John McCain was in Phoenix today, and told reporters there that the focus on immigration during the Republican primary hurt the GOPs image among Hispanics.
Really? I feel awful.
Here I thought that Hispanics were people, not just a skin color. Here I thought there might be some Hispanics out there somewhere that were against illegal immigration. Here I thought there might be Hispanics that think driver’s licenses for illegal aliens was a bad idea.
One might think Sen. McCain feels all Hispanics think the same way.
Speaking to reporters in Phoenix on Cinco de Mayo, McCain said that Hispanic citizens want America’s borders secured and illegal immigrants to be treated humanely.
Ummm…what is it he thinks the rest of us want? The border secured and illegal immigrants beaten with rubber hoses? I just want the flood of criminals and illegal immigrants to stop. Everyone is welcome through the front door, Chief. Let’s just be orderly about it. Close the border, then let’s deal with the problem we already have here.
I’m not alone in this thinking either. Try this on for size, John. From 2005:
An overwhelming majority of Americans think illegal immigration (search) is a very or somewhat serious problem for the country today, and over two-thirds favor using the United States military to stop illegal immigrants from entering the country, according to the latest FOX News Poll. Almost equal numbers say their concern about illegal immigration is based on homeland security and terrorism as say their concern is about jobs and the economy.
A new opinion poll by Zogby International indicates Americans are hardly pleased with the Bush administration on the subject of illegal immigration.
The poll, cited on CNN’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight” program yesterday, noted a huge majority – 81 percent – believes local and state police should help federal authorities enforce laws against illegal immigration. Only 14 percent disagreed.
Voters were also asked, “Do you support or oppose the Bush administration’s proposal to give millions of illegal aliens guest worker status and the opportunity to become citizens?” Only 35 percent gave their support, and 56 percent said no.
Later polls show similar results, Sen. McCain:
- 89% of Americans think illegal immigration into the U.S. is a problem (30% “extremely serious,” 33% “very serious,” and 26% “somewhat serious.” (Time Magazine, Jan. 2006)
- 82% think that not enough is being done along the borders to keep illegal immigrants from crossing into the country. (New York Times/CBS May 2007)
- 68% feel that the number of immigrants who cross the border, whether legal or illegal is “too high”. (Polling Company, Sept. 2006)
- 62% oppose making it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens of America. (Quinnipiac Univ., Feb. 2006)
Americans are tired of our borders being open, our culture being attacked and our language being ignored. Tom Tancredo was right when he called for a time for assimilation. Asked when he thought how long that would take, he said, “I’ll tell you this: It’ll take this long — until we no longer have to press 1 for English and 2 for any other language.”
Your pandering isn’t helping your recruitment of conservative voters, John.
