Sierra Club to Sue Over Proposed Coal-Fired Power Plants

Six states are trying to get ahead in the energy game by constructing eight different power plants. They are coal-fired plants because environmentalists have made it so hard to construct a nuclear plant. Now those same environmentalists are on the attack again:

The suits would be filed in the federal districts where the proposed power plants would be located, Nilles said. The suits would seek to require the plants to go back to state permitting agencies for new permits that meet the tougher emission standards, Nilles said.

Coal-fired power plants are the largest source of mercury emissions in the United States as well as 40 percent of U.S. carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. CO2 is the by far the largest contributor to greenhouse gases that cause global warming.

Read that last sentence again. “CO2 is the by far the largest contributor to greenhouse gases that cause global warming.”

From Wikipedia:

On earth, the most abundant greenhouse gases are, in order of relative abundance:

  • water vapor
  • carbon dioxide
  • methane
  • nitrous oxide
  • ozone
  • CFCs

The most powerful greenhouse gases are

  • water vapor, which causes about 36–70% of the greenhouse effect on Earth. (Note clouds typically affect climate differently from other forms of atmospheric water.)
  • carbon dioxide, which causes 9–26%
  • methane, which causes 4–9%
  • ozone, which causes 3–7%

That information took me less than three minutes to find, which makes this Reuter’s article either A) Propaganda, B) Journalistic Malpractice, or C) the writings of an ignorant, indoctrinated disciple of the Church of Global Warming, or D) All of the above.

The fact that water vapor is “by far the largest contributor to greenhouse gases that cause global warming” isn’t a hard fact to find. Google “most powerful greenhouse gas” and see what you find:

  • Water vapor constitutes Earth’s most significant greenhouse gas…
  • Since water vapor is the most important heat-trapping greenhouse gas in our atmosphere…
  • For the most important greenhouse gas, water vapor, see the essay on …

Why make the comment that CO2 is by far “the largest contributor to greenhouse gases that cause global warming?” The Sierra Club would have a hard time arguing that they should close down coal plants when CO2 is second fiddle.

Now, when you look at your electric bill this summer, after a month of running your air conditioner, and can’t believe how high the cost of energy is, remember this:

The Sierra Club said there are alternatives to coal power plants and that until capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide emissions is proven feasible and affordable, no more coal plants should be built.

Nilles said the Sierra Club has helped stop 63 of the 150 coal-fired power plants that were in the planning stages since 2002, including 31 last year.

Yet, this is somehow all Bush’s fault.

Build nuke plants and build them fast. It is a great time to start new construction in America because the environmentalists are so preoccupied with promoting the CoGW that they actually see nuclear power as a good alternative to coal. And they are right.
