Following Third Loss, Republicans Still Don’t Get It
By Duane Lester • May 14th, 2008Democrats have defeated the Republicans in three consecutive special elections, in districts that have been red for years. In response to that defeat, House Republican Leader John Boehner pimps John McCain as the answer to the problem:
“The results in MS-01 should serve as a wake-up call to Republican candidates nationwide. As I’ve said before, this is a change election, and if we want Americans to vote for us we have to convince them that we can fix Washington. Our presidential nominee, Senator (John) McCain, is an agent of change; candidates who hope to succeed must show that they’re willing and able to join McCain in a leading movement for reform.”
Pardon me, Congressman Boehner, but the change McCain wants to lead veers to the left. This isn’t the reason you guys are losing elections. You’re losing because your constitutents don’t believe you anymore.
You used to stand for fiscal responsibility. Now, you are the standard bears for earmark abuse.
You used to stand for secure borders. Now, you advocate amnesty for illegal aliens without border enforcement.
You used to stand for limited government. Now, you have allowed the government to expand faster than it has in decades.
You have taken the Republican base for granted, and now you are suffering for it. This may be the foreshadowing of a monumental defeat this November. And you have earned it.
It is past time for the career Republicans to fear the voters once again. Perhaps that fear will motivate them to act like conservatives again.
