There is a family down the street from us who own a pit bull. They keep it tied up, but that dog is the reason our dog runs free when our kids play outside. That dog, and stories like this:
A pit bull fatally mauled a 5-year-old boy staying at a southern Texas home with relatives, authorities said.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday. Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Rosa Trevino said the condition of the child’s body suggested there was no way emergency responders could have saved his life.
…
Luis Palomo, 20, said he was down the street playing football with friends when the trouble began. He said the victim was at home with a baby sitter when one of two pit bulls at the house began running around the front yard, getting a second pit bull inside the home riled up.
Palomo said the baby sitter and boy were inside the house with the second dog and were scared, so he tried to intervene. While he managed to distract the dogs temporarily, the boy wandered out the back door. One of the dogs grabbed the boy by the torso and dragged him, locking its jaws around the boy’s neck, Palomo said.
There are stories like this each week. I just don’t get the attraction to this dog. And while I rail against the nanny state and government intervention in our lives, I totally agree with this action:
A small Yakima Valley town where police have destroyed five dogs in six months has banned pit bulls and some other breeds.
The Wapato town council adopted the ban unanimously Monday. It applies to pit bull terriers or mixes of pit bulls and other breeds, including mastiffs, Rottweilers and American bulldogs.
I would have a problem with the federal government banning the animal, but not a town, especially considering people are letting their animals run free and they mauled a four year old girl a year ago there.
What is the attraction to these animals?
