John McCain Promises La Raza That He Will End ICE Raids, Support the DREAM Act

By Duane Lester • Jul 14th, 2008

John McCain was taking questions from the audience he addressed at the National Council of “The Race” when one asked him:

Q: “I am ashamed of these raids that are separating children from parents. As president will you stop these inhumane raids?”

John McCain replies:

A: “We will. With all due respect, you’re talking about a symptom of the problem rather than the problem itself.”

A symptom of the problem? No John, the ICE raids are not a symptom. They are the medicine. See, the problem is that we have an unsecured border, resulting in millions of illegal aliens flooding across the border. The symptom of this problem is the businesses that are hiring illegals by the hundreds.

Later, he was asked:

Q: “Will you support humanity all across the world and support The DREAM Act that we are trying to pass?”

McCain replies:

A: “Yes. Yes, but I will also enforce the existing laws. That’s why we must secure the border…”

For those who have forgotten what the DREAM Act is, here’s a reminder from the Heritage Foundation:

The DREAM Act grants an unusual reprieve to the 10 states that have ignored federal law. The Act retroactively repeals the 1996 federal law that the 10 states violated, making it as though the provisions in the 1996 law never existed.

On top of this insult to the rule of law, the DREAM Act includes a massive amnesty, as noted above. This amnesty opens a wide path to citizenship for any alien who entered the country before the age of 16 and has been in the country for at least five years. The guiding notion seems to be “The longer you have violated federal law, the better.”

Beyond that, all the alien needs is a high school diploma or a GED earned in the United States. If he can persuade an institution of higher education in the United States—any community college, technical school, or college—to admit him, that will suffice. Any illegal alien who meets these conditions (or who can produce fraudulent papers indicating that he meets the conditions) gets immediate legal status in the form of a “conditional” green card good for six years, according to Section 4(a)(1).

It is important to recognize just how sweeping this amnesty is.

All these questions were answered after McCain said the following in his speech:

“I know many of you are Democrats, and many of you would usually vote for the presidential candidate of that party. I know I must work hard to win your votes, but you have always given me a respectful hearing, and I appreciate it. I know many of you were disappointed and hurt by those who used the debate on immigration last year, not to respectfully debate the issue, as most did, but to denigrate the contributions of Hispanics to our great country. I denounced those insults then, and I denounce them today.

This is the man you want me to carry water until November?

I think not.
