Video of McCain’s Statements to La Raza - UPDATED

By Duane Lester • Jul 15th, 2008

In a previous thread, a commenter named Jason asked me to change my headline, that McCain didn’t support the DREAM Act, said he didn’t say what I said he did and was just clearing his throat.

Judge for yourself:

I can’t find video of his comments concerning the halting of ICE raids, but the above video corresponds with what I reported yesterday, adding a little more credibility to the sources of the quotes. So, no Jason, I won’t change the headline.

In McCain’s defense, he did slam this open borders clown, Enrique Morones, with some logic:

For the record, I would love to see an end to the ICE raids. I would love to see the end of people being sent back to their countries of origin. I’m not against LEGAL immigration. But illegal immigration exists because of a shortage. It’s like what happens with price controls. First, you get a shortage, which we have in the number of people who can immigrate here. Then we have to ration out the number of legal immigration spots. Those who don’t get one, turn to the black market and thousands die because of it.

First we have to secure the borders. Putting the military on the borders is a good start. Mexico has their military on their southern border to stop illegal immigrats who are traveling through Mexico to America. We need ours on the border to fight the Mexican drug lord’s personal militias, who are terrorizing the border towns and traveling hundreds of miles into the country in full tactical gear to shoot up houses with automatic weapons. That has to stop.

Next, streamline our immigration system and get people an easier way to immigrate legally. Included in this step is dealing with the millions of illegal immigrants already in America. If our system of immigration is quicker and easier, and we continue the local enforcement that has already produced results in self-deportation, it may be more attractive to go through the system rather than risk their lives sneaking across the border.

The problem won’t be solved until we address those issues. No one said it would be easy, or solved overnight. But it must be dealt with. If he is serious, McCain is right on securing the border first. After the leak is stopped, then we can look at cleaning up the mess.

I don’t want to let Obama off the hook on this either. In his speech, he referred to law enforcement officers as terrorists:

When Barry says “terrorised by ICE immigration raids,” he isn’t just referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers (as if that isn’t bad enough.) No, he’s referring to state and local law enforcement as well. The Sundries Shack explains:

The common read on this is that Obama was talking about ICE agents. No, he wasn’t. He was talking about ICE raids which, I know from professional experience, almost always includes state and/or local law enforcement officers. ICE relies heavily on local police infrastructure for help, which is why it has such a tough time working in Montgomery County. When he says that “ICE immigration raids” are “terrorizing” people, he’s talking about everyone involved in that raid. If you know a police officer, ask if they have ever helped out ICE on a raid. If the officer says yes, then congratulations, according to Barack Obama, you know a terrorist.

Both of these guys were wrong to address this open borders group, but Obama was wildly out of line throwing honest law enforcement officers under the bus for political gain. But then, he threw his grandmother under there, so what’s a few honest cops, right.

UPDATE:

From Yahoo:

A woman was applauded by the audience when she asked McCain whether he would put a stop to “inhumane” raids in which illegal immigrants have been arrested and sent home, sometimes separating them from their families.

McCain described the raids as a symptom of the problem. “Of course we don’t want anything done that is inhumane,” he said.

Once again, that supports what we reported yesterday.
