You remember when company was coming over and the house had to be spotless. You’d dust in areas that you normally neglected, or organize the magazines on the coffee table. You’d keep looking for stuff until the company arrived, then take a deep breath and open the door, hoping they don’t see the mess you hid.
That’s Denver, and the company is the Democratic Convention.
Only they don’t have magazines to stack, they have homeless to clean up. Where you would maybe pile a bunch of dirty laundry in a closet, they are giving away free movie passes and free tickets to the zoo.
Sometimes there were things that you just couldn’t hide, so you had to try to make them look good. Sort of like giving the homeless free hair cuts:
The City of Denver has been working to make sure everything is in tip-top shape for all the visitors coming to town for the Democratic National Convention, and now a local salon is helping in that effort.
It seems to be a first — don’t move the homeless, clean them up. That was the work of one salon and the recipients didn’t even seem to care if the Democrats were coming to town. Sly’s Salon at 17th and Grant was offering free haircuts to the homeless Monday.
“To give them haircuts and make them all spiffed up for the Democratic National Convention, because they are part of our community as well,” said Ghandia Gohnson, co-owner of Sly’s Salon.
The coupons were handed out through the Denver Human Services. What is cool about this is that the salon is doing it for free. As far as I can tell, the city isn’t paying for this. What isn’t cool about this is that it is only because the Democrats are coming to town, and they need to clean up the city.
Rather than volunteer all the time to give haircuts, maybe one day a week at a homeless shelter, they do it because the company is coming over. And what they can’t clean up, they hide.
