KC Star Publisher Registered to Vote in Missouri…And Kansas
You would think that a guy publishing a paper that reports on double voting would be smart enough to just register in one state, but the publisher of the Kansas City Star is registered in both Missouri and Kansas:
The Kansas City Star publisher is registered to vote in Kansas City, MO as Gregory M Zieman, along with with his wife, Rhonda Chriss Lokeman, also of the Star, in Kansas City Ward 8, Precinct 8.
The Star’s publisher is also registered to vote across the state line in Overland Park, KS as G. Mark Zieman (first name is “G. Mark” in the database) in precinct OP-5-4, at the same address as his daughter identified in an Aug 1997 Star article.
As Election Journal points out, the Star reported on double voting back in 2004:
Some vote in Kansas, cross the state line and vote again in Missouri. Others appear to be voting in two different Missouri counties.
Either way, it’s a crime. In Missouri, casting two separate ballots in the same election is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. It can also result in federal charges.
“I was wrong in what I did,” said James D. Scherzer, an attorney who acknowledged to the newspaper that he voted in Kansas City and Kansas City, Kan., in the August 2000 primary election.
Then he did it again in elections in November 2000, August 2002 and November 2002.
The Star’s investigation uncovered more double voters, and records suggest there could be more than 300 statewide.
I wonder how they missed G. Mark. Must have been a simple oversight.
