President Hugo Chavez presented his long-awaited plan to revise the Venezuelan Constitution on Wednesday, including a proposal to eliminate presidential term limits…
Why would a benevolent socialist president want to make such a move? I’m sure it is because he sees term limits as a nothing more than a limit on the people’s right to choose who will lead them, not a way to stay in power for life.
Chavez proposed adding one year to the current six-year presidential term and eliminating the two-term limit, allowing him and future presidents to run for reelection indefinitely. He rejected criticism that he was becoming increasingly autocratic.
“It’s not that I want to enthrone myself,” Chavez said. “This shouldn’t surprise anyone. It’s done this way in any number of countries.
“There are many lies circulating in the world, about a dictatorship in Venezuela, about a concentration of power in Venezuela,” he said. “This is a transfer of power to the people.”
See. Nothing to worry about. Just because he idolizes Fidel Castro doesn’t mean he wants to rule for life. This is about the people.
Of course it is always about the people with socialists. In socialism, the ruling elite know what is best for the people, even though they have no intimate knowledge of them, their situation or their values. Surrender yourself to the government. You cease to exist. You become a member of the collective. Another bee in the hive. It’s for your own good and for the people.
There is no I, only we.
Remember that when you listen to Democrats speak. They are all about “the people,” even when it hurts “the person.”
