A Second Look at Mike Huckabee

The people who are actually paying attention to the state of politics in America were a little surprised with Mike Huckabee’s second place win in the Iowa Straw poll. The Illinois Conservative claims it has motivated some to take a second look at Mike Huckabee. I know it did me:

The first thing you notice about Mike Huckabee when you begin to take a close look is that he is different from all the other candidates and from most national politicians. He is definitely not one of the elite establishment. Mike was the first person in his family to graduate from high school. He is not an alumni of an ivy league college as most candidates are. He does not demand an extravagant life style for himself. In fact when he was Governor of Arkansas, in order to save the taxpayers money, he lived in a mobile home while the governor’s mansion was being renovated .

To this point, he has none of the negatives plaguing the other candidates. His political record has been consistent and open. He is still married to his high school sweetheart and by all accounts has an exemplary family life. In the presidential debates he has participated in thus far, he has clearly been the most impressive, winning accolades for his humor, candor and common sense answers.

The main reason why he is not numbered among the top tier candidates seems to be because he has not been able to raise as much money as the other candidates. For example, although his candidacy is tanking, John McCain raised more than 11 million dollars during the second quarter of ‘07. Mike Huckabee raised less than one million. In the Ames straw poll he spent just a little over 100,000 dollars while the first place winner, John Edwards spent over two million. The fact that Huckabee still came in second may indicate that we exaggerate the importance of fund raising in elections.

I assume he means Mitt Romney spent two million dollars, not John Edwards. Either way, Mike Huckabee has the attention of conservative voters. What I like best about Mike Huckabee is his unwavering support for the FairTax. I hope he finds a way to break into the top tier. I don’t know how likely it is that he would get the top spot, but as the Illinois Conservative says:

The primary season is still young but conservatives should certainly pay close attention to Mike Huckabee during the next few months. He definitely appears to be the most conservative candidate among the current crop of “wannabees”.

Two things the author forgot to mention was Mike Huckabee’s band, “Capitol Offense.” Mike plays bass. I’d give $25 dollars to his campaign for a kick-ass bass solo. And, Huckabee has written a weight loss book titled “Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork : A 12-Stop Program to End Bad Habits and Begin a Healthy Lifestyle.” Huckabee dropped 110 pounds after being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.

The more I hear, the more I like Mike.
