Ron Mexico Pleads Guilty

Football star Michael Vick has entered a guilty plea for his involvement in a dog fighting ring. Vick had claimed he was innocent and that he was being taken advantage of by people who lived at a house he owned.

Then the co-defendants flipped and offered to testify against Vick.

In the statement, Vick agreed to plead guilty and accept a plea deal “after consulting with his family” and will “accept full responsibility for the mistakes he has made,” Fox News reported Monday.

Vick is expected to be sentenced next Monday at US District Court here. He could face up to five years in prison and fines of more than 250,000 dollars as a result of the charges.

I’d wager that he serves under a year and will be back on the field for some desperate NFL Franchise. Just not the Chiefs. And definitely not the Browns.

Oh, and if you don’t get the headline, let me explain via Wikipedia:

In March 2005 a woman named Sonya Elliott filed a civil lawsuit against Vick alleging she contracted genital herpes from Vick – in Autumn 2002 – and that he failed to inform her that he had the disease.[15] Elliot further alleged that Vick had visited clinics under the alias “Ron Mexico” to get treatments and thus he knew of his condition. This led to a deluge of fans ordering customized #7 Atlanta Falcons jerseys on NFLShop.com with the name “Mexico” on the back.[16] Due to the media interest surrounding the case, the National Football League disallowed the use of the jersey/name combination two days after the lawsuit, and does so to this day. The online stores for the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball also disallow customization of jerseys using the same combination. On April 24, 2006 Vick’s attorney, Lawrence Woodward, revealed that the lawsuit had settled out of court with an undisclosed amount.[17]

If you are disappointed about the jersey ban, don’t be. There are plenty of items currently for sale on Ebay.
