Sixteen years ago the question heard around the world was Rodney King’s “Can we all get along?” As the rioting continued to rage on the streets of Los Angeles, media talking heads and journalists all looked for causes of the rioting and solutions to prevent such violence from happening in the future.
Never one to miss an opportunity to create more problems than they can ever hope to solve, the all-knowing, all-seeing United Nations has a global plan, The Alliance of Civilizations, it thinks, will promote every nation and people group’s ability to get along with each other.
“The Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) aims to improve understanding and cooperative relations among nations and peoples across cultures and religions and, in the process, to help counter the forces that fuel polarization and extremism.” http://www.unaoc.org/content/view/39/187/lang,english/
Compare the AoC goals to the U.N. original charter – chapter 1, article 2:
“All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.” http://www.un.org/aboutun/charter/chapter1.shtml
What these dignitaries either don’t understand or bring themselves to admit is that some people are evil, vindictive, and even live for the sake of killing others as sport. Criminals do not respect laws and neither will terrorists nor despots respect the Alliance of Civilizations. However, after decades of failed U.N. efforts and policies, wishful thinking still abounds as evidenced in the statements below:
Considered the brains behind the idea for the AoC, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero remarked: “We want to close off the sources of extremism and win the battle of ideas and principles,” Zapatero was speaking before the high-level group at the AoC’s launch meeting.
Arab League General Secretary Amr Moussa heaped praise upon the AoC initiative: “It is a very important step; it is more positive to discuss about an alliance of civilizations than to be talking of clashes of civilizations.”

With all due respect to religious leaders and diplomats, positive confessions will not make problems go away. As Thomas Sowell has eloquently explained, “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” It brings to memory images of the Iraq official saying Saddam was still in power as coalition tanks were seen moving along in the background; or in The Wizard of Oz when we were supposed to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

The Heritage Foundation uncovers another cause for concern. Exactly what is the definition of being civil with other nations? Is it to keep quiet about injustices in Muslim countries while pointing out supposed inequities in democratic nations? Given the abysmal history of the United Nations on human rights issues one has to wonder. A closing thought: Add the letters “r” and “n” to AoC and you have all the ingredients necessary for a United Nations version of A.C.O.R.N. Freedom loving nations should have no desire to be in alliance with those bent on destroying both freedom and civilization.
