The Nanny State, Racial Profiling and Saggin’

Everything about this story is wrong, wrong, wrong:

Baggy pants that show boxer shorts or thongs would be illegal under a proposed amendment to Atlanta’s indecency laws.

The amendment, sponsored by city councilman C.T. Martin, states that sagging pants are an “epidemic” that is becoming a “major concern” around the country.

“Little children see it and want to adopt it, thinking it’s the in thing,” Martin said Wednesday. “I don’t want young people thinking that half-dressing is the way to go. I want them to think about their future.”

There are no issues of baggy pants or saggin’ pants or thongs showing in my house. Not because of any city ordinance or state law or federal, nanny-state guidelines. It is because I can tell my children “No.”

It’s as profound as it is uncommon, I know. but this would not be an issue if parents simply told their children, “Um, no. You are not going to dress like an idiot or tramp.”

icy_hot_stuntaz.jpgBut, the nanny-state mentality says there is an “epidemic” of sagging pants and the government needs to do something about it. No they don’t. The parents need to be responsible for raising their children. The government needs to protect my rights. Do you want to pay taxes so a government employee can tell kids how to dress? I know I don’t.

Here is the second part of this story that is simply wrong:

(Debbie) Seagraves, (of the ACLU of Georgie), said any legislation that creates a dress code would not survive a court challenge. She said the law could not be enforced in a nondiscriminatory way because it targets something that came out of the black youth culture.

“This is a racial profiling bill that promotes and establishes a framework for an additional type of racial profiling,” Seagraves said.

essay_pants4.jpgIsn’t saying that only black folks dress like that, um , stereotyping. Isn’t that, er, racist? Isn’t that, oh, I don’t know, STUPID!?

So now we have a law that dictates how people can dress, which is dumb to start with, and now the ACLU is saying that it is racial profiling, compounding the stupidity. What is worse is the guy sponsoring the proposal is black! Now he is a race traitor! An Uncle Tom to the thug-life crowd. Because, we all know, only black folks dress like an idiot.

So, we have covered that the law is wrong, because it is the parent’s responsibility, not the government’s. And we have covered the response is wrong, because this isn’t about race.

Now, a couple tips for the reader.

  1. Do not search for sagging on Google without having your filter set to at least moderate. I should have seen that coming. There is so much stuff in the tubes that should not be seen.
  2. I’m pretty sure there is a child predator site out there that deals exclusively with boy and saggin pants, and I think I found it. Again, the hazards of the Google search. Be careful what you click on.
  3. Thank your parents for buying you a belt.
