The United Nations Human Rights Council has spoken on the Israeli/Hamas conflict in Gaza. Here’s what the body had to say:
A divided UN Human Rights Council on Monday adopted a resolution condemning Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip and accusing it of "grave" human rights violations against Palestinians.
That sounds pretty bad for Israel, and if that is all you heard, then you might think Israel was out of line and actually doing something illegal. Here’s some more insight:
Thirty-three African, Asian, Arab and Latin American countries voted for the resolution.
That’s right, the resolution was passed by mainly Arab and African states. While that is expected, the really irritating, no, infuriating part is the non action of the Western states:
Thirteen mainly European states abstained, while Canada was the only country to vote against.
They pulled a state senator Obama move and voted “present.” What spinelessness. If you are against something, and they were, then vote against it. Stand for something, rather than abstain so you don’t upset the Muslim population in your respective countries.
Meanwhile, Hamas is calling its children out to act as human shields in Gaza. Has that been brought to the attention of the UNHRC:
For the record, Hamas fires rockets from schools, hides in hospitals and uses children as human shields, but Israel is the one condemned for human rights violations by the United Nations.
Weasel Zippers echoes my sentiment where the United Nations is concerned.
