This is what happens when you have inexperienced rubes making snap judgements about complex issues.
President Obama has decided to withdraw the charges against terrorist Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri. Army Col. James L. Pohl decided that Obama’s request to suspend military trials while he figures out what to do with the prisoners at GITMO was “not reasonable” and not “in the interests of justice.”
So Obama just had all the charges withdrawn without prejudice and is holding on to the prisoner.
The charges were withdrawn without prejudice, meaning they later can be reinstated in a military commission or pursued in a civilian court. Al-Nashiri will remain in custody.
The original plan was for the announcement not to be made until after President Obama meets with the families of victims of terrorist attacks on 9/11 and on the U.S.S. Cole Friday afternoon, where he will assure them that this step was not done to be lenient towards al-Nashiri.
Somebody explain to me how Obama holding on to a terrorist without charging him with anything is tolerated, but Bush doing that gets the hackles up on a liberal faster than a Marine recruiter at a high school job fair.
As a former sailor, this story really bothers me. I remember standing at work, reading about this bombing, with the kids I worked with asking me about it. I can still remember how angry I was that this happened.
And how did Clinton respond? He. Did. Nothing.
Bush captured the mastermind and put him where he couldn’t hurt another innocent.
And Obama wants to give him due process.
Any wonder why the military votes Republican?
