Craig’s Career Down the Toilet

Sen. Larry Craig has effectively flushed his political career down the toilet. He is expected to resign today following his arrest on lewd acts in a Minneapolis public airport, known for its homosexual activities. His last day is expected to be September 30. Why drag it out that long, Senator? Just go to the closest grocery store, avoid the bathroom and get some cardboard boxes. Then clean out your office and get back to Idaho. Your replacement is already picked and your constituents want you to go:

piccraig.jpgIf Craig does leave office, Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter would name an interim replacement to serve until next year’s election. Otter would most certainly name a fellow Republican, and that person would most likely have a major edge in the 2008 contest, because Idaho is a heavily Republican state.

Meanwhile, a SurveyUSA poll showed that 55 percent of Idaho respondents think Craig should step down. The poll of 475 registered Idaho voters was conducted Tuesday. Thirty-four percent of the 475 respondents said Craig should remain in office.

Meanwhile, the Democrats have a win-win here. If the Republicans hadn’t spoken out against Craig, they would paint it as another example of corruption in the Republican party. But seeing as they have moved against him, obvioulsy they hate gays.

This isn’t about the gay sex. It’s the disgusting bit about sex in a public bathroom. That’s a crime. He should go.

And he went…

Bye Larry:

“The people of Idaho deserve a senator who can devote 100 percent of his time and effort to the critical issues of our state and of our nation,” said Craig, speaking under a clear blue sky at 10:30 a.m. (12:30 p.m. ET) outside the historic Boise Depot in Idaho’s capital city.

“Therefore it is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate, effective September 30th.”
