That doesn't mean that a student that participates in the program cannot be religious or attend church, just that for their however many hours of community service they can't serve it through teaching sunday school or cleaning up a church building for free or going door to door spreading the name of the good Lord. Also, speaking on mandatory service. Why would having students, many of whom do not do a damn thing to help others in need, do something to better their community be a wretched, horrible thing? As a future teacher, I think it is a wonderful tool to teach students that we do live in a community and we should do what we can to give back and help. Now, if a student in my class wants to volunteer by watching young children at church on a Sunday while the adults are in Sunday school or what have you, I personally have no problem with that. However, if I'm bound by the state and the federal government to require my students to participate in non-religious related service, then I'm going to because I can't afford to lose the salary I'll be making despite being an overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated educator in our country. Here is the worst part, "The Bill would forbid any student in the brigade to participate in “engaging in religious instruction, conducting worship services, providing instruction as part of a program that includes mandatory religious instruction or worship, constructing or operating facilities devoted to religious instruction or worship, maintaining facilities primarily or inherently devoted to religious instruction or worship, or engaging in any form of religious proselytization.” That means no church attendance or witnessing.
