Big Oil, Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, but No Big Government?

Don Boudreaux wrote a great letter to the editor of the New York Times.

You have heard or read about the abuses of Big Oil, how they manipulate the price of oil for profit.  You have read about the evil Big Pharma, who sells medicine in America for an obscene profit.  And let’s not forget Big Tobacco, getting rich off the deaths of millions.

Don wanted to know about another "Big" that is never vilified in the modern main stream media – Big Government:

So why do you not routinely describe government as "big government"? The menacing overtones of such a description are especially appropriate for the state because, unlike "big tobacco" and "big oil," government uses violence against persons who refuse to fund its budget and otherwise do its bidding.

Last I knew, Exxon didn’t have an Air Force.  I have never heard of Pfizer’s CIA.  And while Marlboro has a man, they don’t have a police force.

Big government is a far greater threat to the average American than any of the other "Big"s the press likes to demonize.
