Huckabee Makes an Interesting Case for Staying in Iraq

I have stated before, here and in the podcast, that we have an obligation to stay in Iraq because we went there and made the mess. Therefore, it is our responsibility to leave it better than we found it. It’s a simple rule that I teach my children, “Don’t make a mess. If you do, clean it up. Try to leave a place better than you found it.”

Gov. Mike Huckabee offers a different view, but I think it echos the same sentiment:

“We have to continue the surge. And let me explain why, Chris. When I was a little kid, if I went into a store with my mother, she had a simple rule for me. If I picked something off the shelf of the store and I broke it, I bought it. I learned don’t pick something off the shelf I can’t afford to buy. Well, what we did in Iraq, we essentially broke it. It’s our responsibility to do the best we can to try to fix it before we just turn away because something is at stake.”

While you may not agree with why we went, and you may not like being there, we have an obligation to clean up the mess we made, or to buy the broken toy. It is getting better and it is winnable. Let’s not leave a mess for someone else to clean up.
