President Obama told a French reporter “that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.”
Really, that depends on whose demographics you are using. When you look it up, you find there’s really no firm idea how many Muslims live in America.
From the Wikipedia entry on Islam in the United States:
The following are a few of these disputed estimates:
- 1.1 million (2001) City University of New York – American Religious Identification Survey [0.5% of national adult population][39]
- 1.6 million (2000) Glenmary Research Center [0.5% of national population][40]
- 1.8 million (2007) 0.6% of population (2007 est.) The World Factbook[41]
- 1.9 million (2001) American Jewish Committee [0.6% of national population][42]
- 2.0 million (2000) Hartford Institute for Religious Research [0.7% of national population][43]
- 2.4 million (2007) Pew Research Center[44][45]
- 4.7 million (2005) Encyclopædia Britannica Book of the Year [1.5% of national population][46]
- 6-7 million (2001) Council on American-Islamic Relations – The Mosque in America: A National Portrait[47]
- 6.7 million (1997) J. Ilyas Ba-Yunus [2.2% of national population][48]
- 7 to 8 million (2008) Newsweek[49]
When you take the middle road, America is still only #41 on the list, behind the Phillipines.
As has been pointed out on various other blogs and talk shows, while Obama thinks America is one of the largest Muslim nations, he does not consider us to be a Christian nation:
This doesn’t do him any favors in quelling the “OBAMA’S A SECRET MUSLIM!” contingent of the vast right wing conspiracy. In fact, it supports it. I’m not saying they are right. I’m saying his actions, and words, bolster their position.
Here is one last video I want you to watch. It’s about seven minutes long, but it’s worth it. It focuses on the population and birth rates of Western countries and shows that, unless something drastic changes, the Christian nations will all be Muslim nations in the future:
I have five kids, on my way to 8 or 10 or 12, but I can’t do this by myself.
