The polar bear has been trotted out by the eco-Marxists as a prop to promote their doom agenda. The polar bear is a cute animal (remember Knut), so if they can be seen as being threatened by global warming, then every time the AGW story hits the news, polar bears can be broadcast.
The story goes like this: the Arctic sea ice is melting because the Earth is warming. If the sea ice disappears, the polar bears will drown. We have to save the polar bears. However, the polar bear population is greater than it has ever been:
Polar bear populations may in fact may be larger than they were decades ago.
“In the 1950s the polar bear population up north was estimated at 5,000. Today it’s 20- to 25,000, a number that has either held steady over the last 20 years or has risen slightly. In Canada, the manager of wildlife resources for the Nunavut territory of Canada has found that the population there has increased by 25 percent.”
Even if the data from the 50’s is a “guess” it doesn’t take much brainpower to realize that if they are now protected, and hunted less, the population will increase. There’s precedence stories like this for many rebounding animal populations that are now protected.
Now let’s look at the sea ice issue. We were warned the sea ice was going to disappear, but instead, it returned to the original levels seen with records began in 1979.
We are told that the new ice is thinner, and will not last very long. However, the data shows it was twice as thick as it was expected to be, surprising researchers.
The video below shows the entire 30 year history of data on Arctic sea ice. You can see the freezing and thawing of the ice. It happens every year.
