People Just Don't Trust Government The Way They Used To

This is one of the more heartening articles I have read in a while. Perhaps the American spirit is waking up in some people, because distrust of government is at an all time high:

In a recent survey for CBS and The New York Times, just one out five Americans said that they trusted the government to do the right thing all or most of the time, rivaling the lowest marks since the question was first asked in 1958.

Skepticism about the government is one thing, bred into the American DNA since the Revolution and the Constitution. It now borders on cynicism, however, and creates even more than the usual brake on government, especially for a Democratic president.

I would say the lowest point in trust of government wasn’t in 1958, but was immediately following the Revolution. But this is a step in the right direction. I don’t think the American people are ready to talk about doing away with huge chucks of the Federal government, but they might be opinion to something like the Fair Tax.

Are you listening GOP? You need a focusing point. You guys are all over the board and floundering. The people don’t trust the government. That used to be your thing. Take the Fair Tax and run with it. It takes power away from the government and gives it back to the people.

Now is the time.

Let's mix the fair tax and the flat tax.

1% FLAT income tax rate with no deductions, no prebates, not a thing. every check you get they take out 1% for federal taxes.
in addition, they cut the 'sales tax' by about 2/3. 10% eclusive instead of 29% exclusive (~22% inclusive).
3% on used items, 1% on internet sales.

      Not a fan.

No new national sales tax unless they repeal the 16th Amendment. Otherwise, they'll just keep raising both.

well, it'd work better than what we have now and paying an extra 1/3 on the things that we buy. it's 22% "inclusive" but about 29% exclusive. that's just slightly ridiculous in my opinion. either way, a new tax structure is only going to benefit the country if people with common sense run the new tax code. it won't matter what tax code we change to if the same clowns are in office.

We wouldn't pay an extra third. The 23% tax the FairTax puts in place would replace a 22% tax that is hidden from the consumer. When all the other taxes disappear, the FairTax would replace it. There would be very little difference in pricing due to taxation.
