My AIP Article: Nickel and Diming the American Taxpayer

My article for American Issues Project this week is up. Here’s a tease:

A Washington Post article details what a D.C. area biker has to do to keep their bike safe. A lock to keep the body in place. A lock on the tires. Even a lock on the seat. All these security measures add up to around $200 for a $350 bike.

Enter the United States government.

In order to protect the property of bikers, the Department of Transportation and District Department of Transportation have constructed the Union Station Bike Transit Center. It will be able to securely house 130 bikes at a time and features “a changing room, lockers, bike rentals, repairs and a small retail shop selling bike accessories.” The cost to use the facility is $1 a day, or $100 a year.

The cost to build the center? $4 million.

It gets better. Check it out here.

  1. Dominique says:

That is a perfect example of how our government is working. This reasoning is insanity. It makes no sense. And yet, most of our politicians seem to think it makes perfect sense. [head shake]
