McChrystal May Resign if Not Given More Troops

President Obama said the war in Afghanistan was a “war of necessity.”  He told the Veterans of Foreign Wars,

"Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which Al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans."

Now it seems that the “war of necessity” isn’t as important to the Obama administration as politics.  With Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, calling for more troops lest the war in Afghanistan be lost to the Taliban, the White House turns to civilian advisors:

“But before any decision is made, some of President Obama’s civilian advisers have proposed looking at other, less costly options to address his primary goal of preventing al-Qaeda from reestablishing itself in Afghanistan. Those options include a redirection of U.S. efforts — away from protecting the Afghan population and building the Afghan state and toward persuading the Taliban to stop fighting — as well as an escalation of targeted attacks against al-Qaeda itself in Pakistan and elsewhere.”

Why would the White House do this?  Because the left doesn’t think it’s the right thing to do.  After all, “generals always want more troops.”  And the polls show the war isn’t as popular with Americans as it was in 2001.

Here’s the danger Obama faces.  If he goes the political route, and refuses to follow the advice of his generals, one of them could simply decide to hang up his stars

In Kabul, some members of McChrystal’s staff said they don’t understand why Obama called Afghanistan a "war of necessity" but still hasn’t given them the resources they need to turn things around quickly.

Three officers at the Pentagon and in Kabul told McClatchy that the McChrystal they know would resign before he’d stand behind a faltering policy that he thought would endanger his forces or the strategy.

"Yes, he’ll be a good soldier, but he will only go so far," a senior official in Kabul said. "He’ll hold his ground. He’s not going to bend to political pressure."

On Thursday, Gates danced around the question of when the administration would be ready to receive McChrystal’s request, which was completed in late August. "We’re working through the process by which we want that submitted," he said.

So, with the soldiers and Marines on the ground, fighting and dying, and the generals calling for more help, the Obama administration is “working though the process” to get the request for more help to the president.

Are we still to believe that Obama sees this as a war of necessity when they can’t get the general’s assessment to the president’s desk faster than I can order and receive something from eBay?  Honestly, if I bought a pair of Timberland boots in late August and I still hadn’t received them, I would be irate.  However, we are to accept that the administration hasn’t been “ready to receive McChrystal’s request.”

Can you imagine McChyrstal’s feedback?

“Buyer bought into war yet refused to return emails asking for additional troops.  Waited 6 weeks then quit trying.  Trust at your own risk.”

This isn’t something to play politics with.  If Obama refuses to take the action necessary to win this war, it will reinforce the image of America quitting when the going gets tough.  Remember, that is the exact image Osama bin Laden had of us prior to attacking.

Win the war, politics be damned.

Looks like McChrystal is playing a little politics himself….would he quit on his troops? Before the election I thought we had to be in Afghanistan but the more and more we are there, I hate it. Get our troops home now. He might be privy to a bit more intelligence and information now anyhow…

If they want more troops it is time for a draft.

Wow. You are a true leftist, Martin. It took you no time at all to start smearing the military in defense of Obama, and them preemptively surrender.

As for the draft, it isn’t needed. We have the best military in the world already and it is voluntary.

    • Jeromy Henning

We don’t need a draft. We need to reallocate resources from Iraq to Afghanistan. I am currently serving a deployment on the border of Afghan/Pakistan. We are strung out and need more troops along the border with a looser ROE/Detainee reg. Gen McChrystal is doing the proper thing by leveraging his career for more troops. This is more noble than the gutless Generals who kept their mouths shut until they retired and THEN confronted Pres. Bush. More professional soldiers should follow his example and pursue the right thing with vigor with the understanding that soldiers’ lives are at risk (which is infinitely more important than an already successful career).

Frankly, the only Foreign Policy / Defense experience Obama has is defending himself from “truther” claims. I advise the President to listen to what the Generals say, war and national security is not something you play politics with the save your own butt from dropping poll numbers.

Because Obama is playing politics with such an important issue, I can’t blame McChrystal for threatening to quit. I just know the President and others will smear it against the General one way or another and you just can’t put the forces through that wringer – especially not now.

@Duane: Oooh, I didn’t know you wrote for RWN now, too. Congrats!

I have to laugh at Martin’s comment. Well, I almost always laugh at liberals anyway, but its funny how fast they can flip and forget. It wasn’t that long ago during the Bush administration I saw liberals drooling over some pathetic little list of retired flag officers who didn’t like the war in Iraq. But the general who is in the position to know more than anyone exactly what should be done isn’t supposed to be listened to? If he’s not in that position, the president should replace him.

And, if he isn’t going to be supported to do the job he was selected to do, of course he should resign. He’s enduring a huge pay cut at the moment. Much more profitable things are waiting for him and those like him. He doesn’t need the job as much as we need him. Why should he be forced to fail when he knows what is needed not to?

Never mind the whole “we shouldn’t be in Iraq, we should be in Afghanistan because that’s the just war” narrative. This, again, was another flip from Dems like Clinton (she) and Kerry supporting the war in Iraq alongside Bush. Which one of them said “if you don’t agree with me that we need to invade Iraq you shouldn’t vote for me?” All to be expected. Its what liberals do.

As for the draft, if there is any president who is more likely than any other to start one, it is this one. When is the last time a conservative president initiated a draft? When is the last time a Democrat ended one?

The question is will sending thousands more troops end the Afghanistan war? If it would don’t you think they would have done this by now instead of sustaining operations there for so long?

@ Tech: Iraq was the ‘big’ front that was always in the news, so it was more important at the time to ‘win’ that one, because we were holding back the tide in Afghanistan, plus it is a MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper war. If you’re trying to pay off credit cards, the higher interest one gets paid first, usually, and that’s the analogy for Iraq over Afghanistan. The surge worked in Iraq with wild success, and it SHOULD be tried in Afghanistan for the soldier’s sake. I was there for the surge, and yes, having more troops there sucked while you were on base, but it was a helluva lot more effective (plus, who cares if you wait longer in lines and have more generals running around when lives are at stake anyway??????) Barack spent years saying that Iraq was a failure, he’d pull out immediately if elected, the surge would fail, it did fail blah blah blah. then he became president and had to deal with the TRUTH that the surge had worked and he’d been playing politics to get Martin’s vote. He’s between a rock and a hard place right now, because I think he knows what he needs to do, and what will irritate those who voted for him. I’m in full support of doubling the number of troops in Afghanistan, preferably with Marines (yeah, for an army guy to say that…..) to beat back the Taliban and get this started to educate the Afghans.

Right now, Iraqi’s are dealing with what they wanted. They’re learning just how important our American troops WERE to their safety and security and complaining now that we’re not doing enough (even though it was their decision that we leave their cities). The people of these 2 countries need to put Islam on the back burner (which will never happen) and unite more as a Country than as a sect of Islam or tribe. It’s nice to dream about, but I don’t see it happening. That’s the biggest thing that could change the tide of the war in both countries. The people need to turn in the bastards bombing and fight for their country and their honor if they ever want peace.

Martin: where were you when the Dems were ‘playing politics’ with our troops’ lives? Supporting them no doubt? Nice to see that you can’t afford to not take a chance to defend your party instead of using logic and that little brain of yours to see past the partisan politics. It would be BETTER for the General to stay in power for HIMSELF, but not for the war or the troops. This is quite a selfless act if he follows through.

I’m in support of a draft, but we don’t need one right now for the wars. We have enough troops, and people keep volunteering to go back (much to Martin’s confusion) despite what the media said about the wars and our troops. The ones coming home from Iraq, their rotations could be filled in, in Afghanistan to keep the ‘same’ number of troops fighting, but evening it out between the 2 wars. It would also be nice if any other country wanted to chip in as well. I would be in favor of bringing back the draft and the mentality of our military previous to the PC destruction of it not because we need the troops or I like the idea of people going to war, but to help instill our CHILDREN with discipline again, because they’re sure not getting it at home or school. And the only way to give them discipline is to make BT and AIT harder again and not play patty-cake anymore.

Just as a curious and honest question to Martin: what has changed your mind about being in Afghanistan?

No one knows because no one can predict wars and their results. I’m not smearing the military, that is so 2002 GOP. We are still there. Our soldiers are still dying. We are still bleeding money like the terrorists wanted us to. Isn’t anyone upset at the socialist fascist hitler like spending we are doing in a war that was originally going not going to cost any money at all?

Duane – we need a draft because we have soldiers going on 4th and 5th tours and haven’t been home with their kids/family for years. We don’t have the troops necessary obviously.

When we go to war, one of two things should happen. We should have a draft or we should have a war tax put on every individual that is non military in this country. Why? Because unless you have a family member fighting…you have nothing invested in the current war. You wake up, you go to work, nothing changes in your day when we fight an 8 year war. If we were all taxed to pay for this garbage we would hold our leaders more accountable and they would in turn be more accountable. Or have a draft.

Prior to the gulf war, our country was invested in the wars we fought. Women went into factories to build the equipment. It was a time when folks were invested. Now we act like police around the country when someone sits on top of oil and in turn don’t have the money to work on the infrastructure here on our own soil.

    Who would Jesus bomb?

Martin, you are so ‘tenth grade girl’ when you talk like that it doesn’t even deserve a response. How were we invested in Korea or Vietnam (other than the protests)? The last war we were ‘invested’ in was WWII, and that means your generation has royally screwed us all over. Thanks.

Who would Jesus Bomb? Idk, ask him yourself when He tells you that you’re not going to heaven (though, there is time to change that btw…).
