One of the blogs I read regularly is Violent Acres. I enjoy reading the postings of “V” because she writes the type of things I would write if I had less distraction and more focus. Mainly I just like her because she is blunt and unapologetic with her opinions. I wish more people were like that.
The latest posting touched on what I think of as the “Victim Society” problem.
I can’t get over how many people out there who seem content to bitch about life as opposed to actively working to change it. As a society, are we addicted to pain, depression, and drama? Or do we honestly feel helpless, weak, and ineffectual?
I think that as a whole, our society has lost it’s sense of responsibility. I spilled hot coffee on my crotch, so I’ll sue McDonalds. I should get special preference for that job promotion because I’m black. My life sucked back in Mexico, so I’m justified in breaking the law to sneak into your country. These are the kind of things that people get away with in this country.
Politicians use this idea to manipulate public opinion. I find it offensive, and the liberals are the worst offenders. We’re falling “victim” to health care costs that are spiraling out of control. If we don’t outlaw smoking, we’ll be victims of second-hand smoke. We are mandated by law to wear our seatbelt so we don’t become “victims” when we get into a car accident.
There are times when you are a victim. If you are working in a skyscraper and a bunch of Saudis fly a plane into your building and kill you, then you are a victim. If your employer empties out your retirement account and runs off to the Caymans, you are a victim. But if you slip in the shower while staying at the Motel 6, you just had an accident - you’re not a victim. Unless the hotel manager came in and pushed you down.
There are examples of our victim society in the news every day. All you have to do is watch for them and you’ll see what a sad state of affairs our society is in when we’re all the victim. It makes me feel like the victim of massive stupidity.
