Fred Disappoints on Huckabee Challenge

Fred Thompson advocated for a Lincoln/Douglas style debate. Mike Huckabee said, “Sounds good. Let’s you and me do it.”

Fred says, “Um, no.”

“We have the greatest respect for Gov. Huckabee and respect his desire to elevate the discourse in this campaign. But there are nine people running for the GOP nomination and an arbitrary pairing of just two of them does a disservice to the voters. We will push hard for Lincoln-Douglas style debates once we get into the General Election, when there are only two candidates running.”

Fred has little to gain by debating Huckabee and plenty to lose, so I understand his decision. But I still find it disappointing. He looks a little cowardly here by not accepting the challenge.

I am still advocating this style of debate. If I were Mike Huckabee, I would challenge every Republican candidate to this style of debate. But after seeing Mike and Ron Paul go at it in the last debate, I would single the Texas Congressman out. That would be a great debate.
