I received an email recently concerning the 2010 blogging goals I set out recently. I read it once.
Then read it again.
It’s stuck with me for a couple days now. I keep thinking about what was written. I thought I’d share it with you and get your thoughts.
Here it is, sans email address:
It’s all about content…My personal opinion – you have a great concept going here and you have a great perspective on things, but you don’t update enough and your site is half-assed looking.
I check Drudge and HotAir.com non-stop…all because they update/add their content. Even though I enjoy your perspective, I’m resonant to even check your Site, as I know nothing new will be on there…
You need to make a decision, or find a way to continue with the job, wife and 5 kids…
You have great hopes, dreams and aspirations – all which I will support, but none will come true until you start taking this Site seriously, as opposed to a hobby.
Just my thoughts, as I want to see you do well.
If it were just a letter ranting about how bad the blog is, I could dismiss it. But that last sentence really made me consider the content of this one. If he’s wanting to see me to do well, then the criticism carries more weight in my book.
Let’s take his points as they come. First off:
you don’t update enough
This is a tough one, because I agree with him. Let’s look at some stats for a second. Here’s what Google Reader says about All American Blogger:
It says I average about 16-17 posts a week. Now look at Gateway Pundit:
He’s putting down about 82 a week. And Hot Air:
They are putting out 124 a week. Just crushing me. But you also have to consider you are dealing with Ed Morrissey and Allahpundit combined, and Malkin didn’t hire them for their good looks.
However, I think I can do better than 16.8 posts a week. He makes a good point there. What it comes down to is scheduling posts to pop when I am away from the computer. While it might not be timely or breaking, it will still be content that you might not otherwise have seen.
I can also add shorter posts ala Gateway Pundit. He doesn’t do much punditry as informing.
Something I will work on, nonetheless. Now, on to his next point:
your site is half-assed looking
If there is any weight to this point, it’s in my contributions to the site via adding things to the sidebar. Recently I have been adding things to build reader communities outside of the blog and to give new readers an opportunity to read some of the older posts and the sidebar has become a bit distracting.
What do you think? Is it distracting? Have I gone too far?
As far as the rest of the site, I think the header is very professional and the layout of the blog well done.
I check Drudge and HotAir.com non-stop…all because they update/add their content. Even though I enjoy your perspective, I’m resonant to even check your Site, as I know nothing new will be on there…
With Drudge and Hot Air, you are dealing with a team of people who do nothing but update their respective sites, all day long. That’s their job. It’s difficult for me to try to live up to that level of product being a full time dad, full time husband, full time worker.
Which brings me to his next point:
You need to make a decision, or find a way to continue with the job, wife and 5 kids…
You have great hopes, dreams and aspirations – all which I will support, but none will come true until you start taking this Site seriously, as opposed to a hobby.
I assume by “make a decision” he means a decision to either stop blogging or quit my job and blog full time. So far, I have not had any billionaires offer to pay my salary and provide health care benefits to my family, so until that happens I am just going to have to come up with a different plan.
This is really the part of the letter I struggle with the most. I feel he has a very strong point.
When I told my wife about this, she asked me, “Have you prayed about it?” I replied, “No.”
“You should.”
She’s right.
I don’t plan on ending the blog. I don’t even consider that an option. I’ve put almost three years into this site and I really enjoy writing it.
But if I am going to take it to the next tier, I have got to do something differently. So, I am going to take my wife’s advice and pray on it. And I would appreciate it if you would pray for me as well, if you are the praying sort.
I would also love to know what you think of the letter, the site and any other insights or opinions you feel like offering. Consider it an opportunity to voice any and all criticism or praise you have for All American Blogger.
Thanks for reading. I really appreciate it.
