President Barack Obama was trying to calm down people who were up in arms that he would dictate to churches that they would have to violate their beliefs. In doing so, he actually said something as politically important as when he gaffed and said Fed Ex and UPS were doing fine, but the Post Office was screwed.

Here’s what he said:

Obama went out of his way to say that he supports freedom of religion, pointing out that one of his stints as a community organizer in Chicago was funded by a Catholic group.

“As a citizen and as a Christian I cherish this right,” Obama said. “I saw that local churches did more good for a community than a government program ever could.”

Yeah, that’s what we on the right have been saying for centuries.

Clearly Obama isn’t a libertarian. He was in full butt-kissery mode and spilled this sentence out of his mouth without thinking about what it actually meant.

But it’s still true. Churches and local organizations have had a bigger positive impact on the community that any government program ever had, or ever will.

A Denver woman is claiming the TSA refused to let her board a flight in Wyoming because they didn’t have any female TSA agents to giver her a rub down, I mean a hands on pat down:

“They asked if I was on the flight to Denver, I said yes, they said that they couldn`t screen me because they sent all the female TSA agents home,” Winning said.

A female agent was necessary because of those new pat-downs.

“I said, `Would you be willing to let me sign a waiver and I would approve for a man to pat me down if necessary?` and they said no,” she said.

No way would they. As I have written before, these folks have very clear policies and procedures that dictate what they are to do, when and how. There is no waivering from those procedures and independent thought in new situations in frowned upon. If it isn’t covered, default to saying “No.”

I imagine there are a lot of you who are asking the same question Jennifer Winning asked:

“If you can’t clear it without a female, why would you send them home?”

The answer? I’m betting it’s this:

Airport screeners around the county have chosen the nation’s largest federal employee union to represent them in collective bargaining talks with the government, federal officials announced Thursday.

Unions don’t like overtime. If there is an employee working overtime, then that’s hours another union dues paying employee isn’t working. So rather than schedule a female on overtime, they just let the shift run without one.

And the passengers get to rent a car and drive home from Wyoming.

I expected to be one of the first people in the CPAC Blogger’s Lounge this morning, and I was. What I wasn’t expecting was for John Brodigan to beat me into the lounge, especially considering the state he was in when I left him last night:

I got the All American Interview area set up:

One of the things that has changed since the first CPAC I attended is the treatment of bloggers. Check out the spread they laid out for us this morning.

Some fresh fruit…

A nice apple thing…

And most importantly, plenty of coffee…

The room is starting to fill up and the conference is underway. Should be a good next few days.

Thanks again to all those who made this possible with their generous donations.
