An All American Falls: Paul Harvey has Died

I grew up listening to Paul Harvey tell me the rest of the story and to stand by for news.  He died today.  He was 90:

Harvey was a news commentator and talk-radio pioneer whose staccato style made him one of the nation’s most familiar voices.

He was forced off the air in 2001 because a virus weakened a vocal cord. But he returned to work in Chicago and was still active as he passed his 90th birthday.

Known for his resonant voice and trademark delivery of "The Rest of the Story," Harvey had been heard nationally since 1951, when he began his "News and Comment" for ABC Radio Networks.

Rest in peace, Mr. Harvey.  You will be missed.

Australia's Government to Take Bold Action on Animal Flatulence

With the current state of the world economy, the Australia government sees it as a priority that they take the average Aussie’s taxes and spend them reducing the amount of methane animals down under emit.  In layman’s word’s this is the Australian version of the War on Farts:

Methane gas from livestock flatulence accounts for about 12 percent of the country’s annual greenhouse gas emissions, Agriculture Minister Tony Burke said as he launched the 26.8 million dollar (17.4 million US dollar) project.

The emissions from 120 million sheep, cows and goats comprise the country’s third-largest source of gases blamed for climate change, he said in a statement received Thursday.

A beef cow expells the equivalent of around 1,500 kilograms (3,300 pounds) of carbon per year, the statement said. Most carbon pollution is produced by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil and coal.

We are talking about spending nearly $30 million dollars that the government took out of the taxpayers pocket, and spending it on:

  • changing diets
  • chemical and biological controls of stomach bacteria to reduce methane production
  • genetic approaches such as selective breeding

So how much will it take to change the diet of cows, sheep and goats?  Grass seems to be pretty cheap, so anything else is going to increase the cost to the farmer, therefore raising the cost for the consumer.  As will feeding the animals some chemical or biological version of Gas-X.

How would you like to be the person who has to measure which goat farts the most?  I don’t know which is more offensive:  that visual or the fact taxpayers are actually paying for it.

I’m just glad this is still just an Australia thing, otherwise, I might be a bit irritated.  Just kidding, we’re into it too:

Globally, livestock are the largest source of methane from human-related activities – and in the U.S., the third largest source. Livestock production can also result in emissions of nitrous oxide, a very potent greenhouse gas, and carbon dioxide, the most abundant greenhouse gas. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production through management strategies that improve production efficiency and result in lower emissions per unit of milk or meat produced.

To find out more about livestock emissions and how the adoption of improved livestock production practices can help to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, check out the following sites:

Frequent Questions. Questions and answers about how methane is produced from livestock and what measures can be done to reduce these emissions.
Resources and Tools. Information and models to measure and evaluate livestock production impacts on methane emissions.

Meanwhile, water vapor is going unregulated:

In order, Earth’s most abundant greenhouse gases are:

* water vapor
* carbon dioxide
* methane
* nitrous oxide
* ozone
* CFCs

When these gases are ranked by their contribution to the greenhouse effect, the most important are:

* water vapor, which contributes 36–70%
* carbon dioxide, which contributes 9–26%
* methane, which contributes 4–9%
* ozone, which contributes 3–7%

And, the Earth is actually getting cooler:

According to the National Climate Data Center, the earth is cooling. The earth has been cooling since 1998, when the warming trend peaked in conjunction with heightened sunspot activity. In fact, 2008 may go down as the coldest year in a decade.

The lunatics are running the asylum, and you and I are footing the monthly payments for treatment.

Light At The End Of The Tunnel Turned Off!

It is a painful time for Americans of my age. We have the memories of an America, glorious and honorable in her past… a past, which has been forgotten and erased, in many cases, from the history books of America’s students. Above all things our America was honorable. A young American today would be hard pressed to define “honor.” To define “dishonorable” is much easier. One has only to turn one’s attention to the actions of the American Congress, ruled by the American Left, for a real-time view of dishonor.

As we Americans view ourselves in that inner mirror, we can know that even today, America can be defeated… only by herself. And that is the shameful path we have chosen.

One of our Founding Fathers and President, John Adams, once said: Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.

I did not watch the President make his speech before the joint session of Congress. I knew that I would be looking for the strings attached to his arms during his performance, and I would not be able to concentrate on his words. Not that his words mattered much. If we have learned anything about the American people during the just recently closed presidential campaign it is that Americans don’t care what a candidate says. They care about HOW the candidate says it. Same thing applies now that Obama is President.

Americans of my generation, who still recognize a republic, when we see one, also recognize when that republic is gone. The American republic is gone … replaced by a socialist government… complete with Central Planning.

You see, the new socialist government in America has grasped the American economic system, and by doing so, it now has absolute power over the American people. It will now rapidly proceed to destroy our liberty. Indeed, it has already begun.

There are a few basic, fundamental truths people who live in a republic know. Truths, which we Americans, have forgotten because our horrible public education system failed to educate our children over the past two generations. They are truths which all people who want to live free know. Now, I am not referring to living free under a socialist government and in a socialist society as we have now chosen. These are truths FREE MEN and FREE Women (like we used to be) know.

William Boetcker, an outspoken political conservative and Presbyterian minister is perhaps best remembered for his authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots. In that pamphlet he summed up so much of what modern day Americans have forgotten. Some the most applicable “cannots” which would apply today, especially after Obama’s speech to Congress and, I’m sure, after his budget is sent up to Congress, are summed up in the few lines which follow. Please read them and pay careful attention to what the Rev. Boetcker is saying.

“You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot lift the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred. You cannot establish security on borrowed money. You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”

The good reverend NAILED it! But our elite intelligentsia in the US Congress and in the White House doesn’t get it. Voltaire captured the current US Congress a very long time ago when he said: “In general, the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other.”

Even C. S. Lewis, who I have never been particularly fond of, actually said something I agree with. He said: “Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

One of our Founding Fathers, one the Democrats, in particular say they love with highest esteem would be completely flabbergasted at the co duct of our current democratic government. Thomas Jefferson would notice immediately the deep stain of socialism on the fabric of the American Republic were he to see it today under democratic Party control. Jefferson said: “To take from one, because it is thought that his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare others, who, or whose fathers have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, ‘the guarantee to every one of a free exercise of his industry, and the fruits acquired by it.”

“Socialism in general has a record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it.” Thomas Sowell said that. Sowell also said: “One of the consequences of such notions as “entitlements” is that people who have contributed nothing to society feel that society owes them something, apparently just for being nice enough to grace us with their presence.”

And finally, this from Richard John Neuhaus: “Socialism is the religion people get when they lose their religion”

So why do I bring up the anti-socialism expressions of these of these very public thinkers? Because, dear reader, the current socialist government under the Democrats WILL FAIL. It has NEVER succeeded before in history and, I repeat, it WILL fail this time. However, the other great downside to socialism is that in it’s failure it does great damage to the country and to the people of the country who were foolish enough to try it.

It is important for us all to know that when the Democrats begin making excuses, as they surely will, for the failure of their brand of socialism in America, understand that they knew , going in, that it would fail. They knew going in, that they were about to do great, I mean, immense harm to this nation… and they did it anyway! They did it out of greed for power and dominance of the government of a people they cared so little about they were willing enslave them in the bonds of a form of government with it’s birthing cradle in the deepest, hottest, part of hell itself.

They will break this country, they will bankrupt this country, and they will enslave our souls if we allow them.

I’m not a prophet. I’m an old country boy who grew up on a steady of diet of common sense with a family that drilled into me the importance of freedom to the individual no matter his station in life.

If President Obama has said anything approaching truth in his meteoric rise to the Office of President it is the words he uttered declaring that things will get a whole worse before they get better. That is true. Right up until the country collapses, of the weight of its government, things are going to decline. Look at the stock market. The socialists come out, hold news conferences, and the stock market plunges. The true movers and shakers of America understand what is happening and they are getting out. They are seeking cover until after the collapse. Then they hope to, once again, try to build an America from the wreckage left by the socialists masquerading as democrats in charge of our government today.

Yes, the light at the end of the tunnel has been turned off. For the next few years were are left to stumble about in the darkness of socialism on our own. For, you see, my fellow American, we got ourselves in to this mess and it is up to us to get ourselves out of it.

Jewish People Apparently Only People Who Didn't Know Hillary Clinton was a Liar

Hillary has followed the Obama Administration model by changing her position from what she claimed in the past.  Before, she claimed to be a strong supporter of Israel.  Today, she’s blasting them.

Jewish leaders as taken aback by her switch.  Conservatives hold back a wave of, "We told you so"s:

On Thursday, as Secretary of State she had yet another about face in the form of angry messages demanding Israel speed up aid to Gaza. Jewish leaders are furious.

"I am very surprised, frankly, at this statement from the United States government and from the secretary of state," said Mortimer Zuckerman, publisher of the New York Daily News and member of the NYC Jewish Community Relations Council.

"I liked her a lot more as a senator from New York," Assemblyman Dov Hikind, D-Brooklyn, said. "Now, I wonder as I used to wonder who the real Hillary Clinton is."

The real Hillary Clinton?  Wow, man.  That is a dangerous mix of a gorgon and a leathery backed savenger of opportunity.

Here’s a peek.  Don’t look to long or you risk turning to stone, or prolonged impotence:

Seriously though, are you kidding me?  These folks are surprised that a Clinton said one thing when trying to get elected and did another when in office?  Are they new to this game?

Well, not everyone was surprised by her move:

"Hillary had Mrs. Arafat here and she invited Mrs. Arafat for lunch when she was the first lady," added Babak Chafe of Great Neck. "She is pro-Palestinian 100 percent, really. Of course, we always knew it."

We knew it too.  Now, could you perhaps tell your Jewish friends to stop voting for the left.  They don’t have their best interests in mind.

A Little Tribute to the Fine People I Met Yesterday

My first day at my first at CPAC was great, mainly because of the people I met.  Let me share with you the fine folks I mingled with at CPAC 09:

  • Jimmie from the Sundries Shack helped me get wifi and introduced me to a lot of people.  Big thanks to him.
  • Ed Morrissey from Hot Air was doing his show across the table from me on Blogger’s Row.  I made sure to thank him for the attention he gave RFC Radio last week.
  • Finally met Melissa Clouthier in person.  She writes at Right Wing News and her own blog.  She may be the most cheerful person in the DC-Metro area.  What a treat it was to meet her.
  • I also met Katie Favazza.  If you don’t know, aside from her blog, she is a member of Smart Girl Politics.
  • Robert Stacy McCain.  Here’s your shameless link, my friend. Do you have a Twitter account?
  • Alfonzo Rachel was a great person to chat with.  He seemed a little overwhelmed with how much everyone loves his videos.
  • Andrea Shea King, the Radio Patriot, was at the American for Fair Taxation affair.
  • As was Fausta.  Both are really nice ladies.  Here is Fausta’s Blog.
  • Laura Williams sat behind me at Pajamas Media’s Conservatism 2.0 lectures/panels.  I met her and Horace Cooper at the Conservative Leadership Conference.  They had a briefing at 6:00, but I was still at the ATR open bar saying, "OK, just one more rum and Coke."  Sorry, Laura.  I really meant to go.  And I know it was an open bar there also.
  • James Joyner of Outside the Beltway is here also.
  • Finally, Jimmie introduced me to Bettina Inclan.  You can follow her on Twitter.  She a great person to chat with, and very soft on the eyes.

Well, I am looking forward to another great day today.  Hopefully I can meet even more fabulous conservatives.

Here’s a bonus for you – the speech John Bolton gave yesterday that I thought was worth hearing:

CPAC Summary So Far

Thanks go to Jimmie at Sundries Shack for hooking me up with the super secret CPAC bloggers wifi.  Now I can actually update the blog and send out tweets.

There are almost 9,000 people here and the theme as far as I can see is how to get the GOP back to conservatism.  The opening speaker this morning was fantastic.  His name is Paul Ryan, Republican Congressman from Wisconsin.   His speech was a barn burner.  After listening to him for 45 minutes, I was ready to storm the tower!

Following him, I was pumped and actually, was thinking about bailing on John Bolton.  I’m glad I didn’t.  His speech was hilarious.  He spoke on national security and found a way to keep me not only interested, but laughing.  The audience rose cheering and clapping when he ended his speech with a call to make Obama a one termer.  I am glad I stuck around to hear him.

After that, I worked my way over the Pajamas Media’s Conservatism 2.0 shin-dig.  Here’s where I probably lose my chance of ever becoming a part of PJ Media.

Their lecture was scheduled to start at 11:45, but it wasn’t underway until almost 12:15.  And that was a video from November 19th.  It was really disappointing.  When the live panels started, the panel with Alfonzo Rachel.  I spoke with him after the panel and he is a genuinely humble and thankful guy.  I talked with him about doing a show on RFC Radio.  Cross your fingers.

I left that lecture early and made my way to the Exhibit Hall.  I finally found Melissa Coulter and she said I need to change my picture on the site.  She says I look depressed.  Jimmie from Sundries Shack says I look like Ivan Drago.  Either way, they both agree I need to make the picture cheerier.  I chose that picture because I thought I looked serious, but perhaps they are onto something.  Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion in the comments.

One thing is for sure.  This is not a dead party.  This is a party that is angry at those who supposedly carry its banner in Washington.  The problem is getting those who have abandoned conservatism to either get back on board or out of office.  The only way to really get a politicians attention is through votes or money.

Perhaps we need to stop donating to the GOP, and start funneling loads of money to the true conservatives in office.  What do you think?

Day One at CPAC

We are off to a great start.  I set my alarm clock on the Mac for 0400 and when it went off, blaring "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring, I promptly reset it for 0430.

Ten minutes later, my brother informed me it was after 5.

Stupid time zones.

Regardless of my less than stellar start, I am looking at a great day of lectures and networking with some of my online friends.  As I said on numerous occasions, meeting people online is cool, but there is no replacement for meeting in person and putting palms together.

I know Jimmie from the Sundries Shack will be there for all three days.  I hope to finally meet him.  I have been a fan of his blog for some time.

The Fisking of Obama…by the Associated Press

Believe it or not, the Associated Press has considered President Obama’s speech, and found it lacking:

OBAMA: "And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it."

THE FACTS: Depends what your definition of automobiles, is. According to the Library of Congress, the inventor of the first true automobile was probably Germany’s Karl Benz, who created the first auto powered by an internal combustion gasoline engine, in 1885 or 1886. In the U.S., Charles Duryea tested what library researchers called the first successful gas-powered car in 1893. Nobody disputes that Henry Ford created the first assembly line that made cars affordable.

___

OBAMA: "We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy. Yet we import more oil today than ever before."

THE FACTS: Oil imports peaked in 2005 at just over 5 billion barrels, and have been declining slightly since. The figure in 2007 was 4.9 billion barrels, or about 58 percent of total consumption. The nation is on pace this year to import 4.7 billion barrels, and government projections are for imports to hold steady or decrease a bit over the next two decades.

___

OBAMA: "We have already identified $2 trillion in savings over the next decade."

THE FACTS: Although 10-year projections are common in government, they don’t mean much. And at times, they are a way for a president to pass on the most painful steps to his successor, by putting off big tax increases or spending cuts until someone else is in the White House.

Obama only has a real say on spending during the four years of his term. He may not be president after that and he certainly won’t be 10 years from now.

Facts?  We don’t need no stinking facts!

"8,570 earmarks worth about $7.7 billion"

President Obama tells us this is the time for fiscal responsibility, yet the Congressional omnibus bill is loaded down with pork.  Nearly $8 billion worth of special projects are found in the bill, and the Democrats say the Republicans are playing politics by pointing it out:

Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, D-Md., distributed a handout Tuesday at his weekly news conference entitled, "You can’t spell ‘earmark’ without an ‘R,’" which stated that 40 percent of the earmark dollars included in the bill were sponsored by Republicans.

The appropriations omnibus (HR 1105) is scheduled for a House vote Wednesday.

"Republicans are continuing to try to sweep their history under the rug and convince the American people that they are committed to fiscal responsibility," stated the handout. "But their record on earmarks and the amount of earmarks contained in the omnibus appropriations bill make it clear that Republicans are just using this as another political ploy."

You know what would be cool? If Steny Hoyer weren’t right.

Republicans have a hard row to hoe here. They need to condemn the Democrats here for their outrageous spending, but in doing so, find themselves the target.  They have this coming and frankly, I hope it hurts.  They need to understand the damage they have done to the Republican brand by feeding into the same spending habits of the Democrats.

However, they can fight this by simply pointing out that the past actions of the Republicans don’t excuse the current actions of the Democrats.  It’s a logical fallacy and can be cast aside.  The main way to do this is to get rid of all those Republican earmarks, and then talk with the knuckleheads who put them in there in the first place.

This monster has almost 9,000 earmarks in it.  And like Hoyer said, nearly 40% of those belong to Republicans.  Clean up your own house before telling the neighbor to clean his.
